The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has a gross voted allocation of over €315 million in 2016, comprising of €236.4 million in current expenditure and €79 million in capital expenditure.
In addition, over €6 million in capital expenditure originally allocated in 2015 has been carried over into 2016, bringing the overall amount of voted funding available to the Department in 2016 to almost €322 million.
€60 million of the €315 million allocated in 2016 goes to the Arts Council, almost €23 million to Waterways Ireland, over €14 million to the Irish Film Board and over €13 million to An Foras Teanga. Grants to the National Museum, the National Gallery and the National Library account for almost €27 million. Taken together, funding to these seven bodies accounts for 44% of the Department’s allocation.
Close to €49 million will provide for an inclusive and wide ranging national commemorative initiative as an enduring acknowledgment of the 1916 Rising.
€35.8 million, or 11% of the Department’s 2016 allocation, is for salaries and other administration expenses in the Department.
