National City of Culture
Limerick City was awarded the designation of Ireland’s first National City of Culture for the 2014 calendar year. The designation was made by the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht on 3 July 2012. The aim of the National City of Culture Initiative was to deliver a programme of cultural events and engagement in a city for one year, which would also have a longer-term positive impact. The National City of Culture Initiative brought artists, arts organisations, local authorities and civic groups working in the city together through the design of a calendar of events that showcased all that the city had to offer in arts and cultural expression.
