Collaboration with other Government Departments

  • Planning Policy and Guidelines
The Department works closely with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government in the development of spatial planning guidelines and the formation of planning policy insofar as it relates to architectural heritage matters …
The Retail Design Manual to accompany the Retail Planning Guidelines for Planning Authorities (2012) was a joint publication of both departments, placing an emphasis on sustainable retail development that incorporates architectural heritage in a holistic, integrated manner.
  • Rural Development Programme (LEADER)
The Department worked with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government to develop a structure for heritage projects funded under the LEADER programme, to enable high quality projects to conserve the rural built heritage, renew and develop villages and the countryside and encourage rural tourism. To ensure that the character of historic structures and areas is preserved and enhanced by these projects, the Department produced Additional Operating Rules for Heritage Projects and a Heritage Project Flow Chart to guide local action groups. The new RDP Programme, due to commence during 2015, will continue this successful collaboration.
  • Traditional Building Skills and Conservation Education
Traditional building skills and conservation education are vital for creating and maintaining the expert workforce – professional, management and craft – to ensure that our architectural heritage will be protected and sustainably repaired and developed. An action plan to deal with the issues around the provision of traditional building skills and conservation education is being prepared.
