03/12/2014 : Yeats 2015 an opportunity to empower children through education—Ó Ríordáin
Wednesday, 3rd December—Speaking at the launch of Yeats 2015, commemorating 150 years since the birth of W.B. Yeats, the Minister of State for New Communities, Culture and Equality, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin T.D., stated that this year-long commemoration should be used as an opportunity to empower children through literacy and education.
Minister Ó Ríordáin said: “All too often we focus on the economy; on budgets; and on finance. But we must ensure that we never lose focus on improving the society that we live in. The beauty of W.B. Yeats’ writings offers us that richness that is so important to our society. Let’s grasp the opportunity that Yeats 2015 provides us with to ensure that no child loses out from the rich benefits of literacy and education.
“I am pleased that the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has provided funding of €500,000 to Yeats 2015, and I am confident that this excellent programme of events and initiatives planned throughout the coming twelve months has the potential to bring Yeats to every home across Ireland.
“Education empowers people, and every child must have the opportunity to enrich their own lives, and our society, by benefitting from this. I want to commend the tireless work put in by the Yeats National Steering Committee, led by Senator Susan O’Keeffe, in organising what I am sure will be an extremely successful programme of commemorating the writings and legacy of Yeats throughout 2015.”
