12/03/2014 : Minister of State McGinley welcomes the appointment of An Coimisinéir Teanga
Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley T.D., has welcomed the appointment of the new Coimisinéir Teanga, Mr Rónán Ó Domhnaill. President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, presented Mr Ó Domhnaill with his seal of office at a ceremony in Áras an Uachtaráin this evening (12 March 2014).
Speaking at the event, the Minister of State said: “I greatly welcome this appointment. Rónán Ó Domhnaill is very well qualified for the position of An Coimisinéir Teanga and I have no doubt that his personal commitment to the Irish language, and his extensive professional experience, will greatly benefit him in his new position. I wish him the very best as he takes up this important office.”
The Office of An Coimisinéir Teanga was established in 2004. The primary duties of the Office are to monitor compliance with the Official Languages Act 2003 and to provide advice in relation to the Act. Mr Rónán Ó Domhnaill is the second Coimisinéir Teanga. He succeeds the first Coimisinéir, Mr Seán Ó Cuirreáin, who recently resigned having spent ten years in office.
