12/09/2011 Minister Deenihan congratulates the local community in Clones on the success of the National Famine Commemoration 2011
Today (12/09/11), Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht praised the huge community effort which went into the preparations for this year’s National Famine Commemoration in Clones, Co. Monaghan. The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese led the official representation at the commemoration ceremony.
He commented: “The National Famine Commemoration was a dignified and poignant event and as Chair of the National Famine Commemoration Committee, I was honoured to play a part. The welcome shown by the community of Clones and surrounding areas to the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese greatly added to the occasion.
He continued: “I know that the local community put in a massive effort in organising the event and I would like to thank them sincerely. In particular, I would like to thank members of the Clones Town Council, Monaghan County Council, Clones Community Forum Ltd, Clogher Historical Society and the Cassandra Hand Centre on Monday, 20th June in Clones. I would also like to mention all those who took part in the ceremony itself. It was a fitting tribute to all those who perished during the famine”.
