16.03.11 Minister of State McGinley makes his first official visit to the Galway Gaeltacht

The Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Dinny McGinley T.D., today (16/03/11) made his first official visit to the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs in Na Forbacha, Co. Galway. He also paid a visit to Údarás na Gaeltachta and Oifig an Choimisinéara Teanga.

Commenting on his visit, the Minister of State said: “As a Gaeltacht person, I am delighted to be dealing as Minister of State with an issue that is close to my heart, that is Irish language and Gaeltacht affairs.”

With regard to the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language, the Minister of State said: “As stated in the Programme for Government, the Government intends to support the Strategy so that the achievable goals in the Strategy can be delivered. I fully understand the current fragile state of Irish language and Gaeltacht affairs. I believe, however, that the Government can improve these matters significantly through implementing the Strategy as much as possible within existing economic constraints.”

As a first step, the Minister of State said that he intends to consult Irish language and Gaeltacht stakeholders so that he can properly understand the issues facing people in the sector.
