Expressions of Interest invited for the post of
An Coimisinéir Teanga
The Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Mr Dinny McGinley, announced today (16 January 2014) that expressions of interest are being invited through the Public Appointments Service from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment as An Coimisinéir Teanga. Applications will be accepted up to and including Thursday 30 January 2014. Information on how to submit expressions of interest is available at www.publicjobs.ie.
The functions of An Coimisinéir Teanga include monitoring compliance by public bodies with the Official Languages Act 2003; carrying out investigations in this regard; providing advice to the public regarding their language rights under the Act; and providing advice to public bodies regarding their language obligations under the Act. The person appointed to the post will take over from Mr. Seán Ó Cuirreáin who will be resigning as Coimisinéir Teanga on 23 February 2014.
Minister McGinley said that he was very pleased to announce that the process of appointing a new Coimisinéir Teanga is underway. “This is an important statutory office holder who has a key role to play in ensuring that the Official Languages Act is functioning effectively. I am confident that there will be widespread interest in the post from among the cohort of people who are eminently suitable for this important post,” the Minister said.
