Subsidised Heavy Cargo Service for West Cork Islands

Minister of State, Dinny McGinley, has announced today (26th February, 2012) that the Department has sanctioned a grant for Comharchumann Chléire Teo to provide a heavy cargo service to four islands in West Cork – Cape Clear, Sherkin Island, Hare Island and Long Island.  The Carbery Isle Ferries Teo. company will provide the service.

The service will run for 50 days over a period of one year from 1 January 2012 at a cost of €950 per sailing. Making the announcement, Minister McGinley said that this arrangement will ensure that the islands in West Cork will have a reliable cargo service and that the island communities’ living costs will be reduced as a result.  “I am pleased that arrangements are in place regarding a regular cargo transport service for West Cork and that the cost of transporting the goods will decrease as a result,” said Minister of State McGinley.
