The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is responsible for programmes that commemorate a number of key events in Irish history. Ireland 2016 is a national initiative to mark the year of the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. The Decade of Centenaries Programme focuses on the many significant centenaries occurring over the period 2012–2022, in a manner that is respectful to the different traditions and communities on the island of Ireland. The National Famine Commemoration remembers those who suffered during the Great Famine 1845 – 1850.
