Additional Claims in respect of Pier Developments on Aran Islands
The Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Seán Kyne T.D., has announced that, having received relevant sanctions, he is proposing to allocate a sum of €6 million to Galway County Council in relation to the additional claims in respect of works carried out some years ago on Caladh Mór and Cill Rónáin Piers on the Aran Islands. These claims have been, for a number of years, the subject of correspondence between his Department and the County Council. The €6 million allocation, together with a sum of €900,000 paid to the Council by his Department over the previous 3 years, is being proposed as a full and final settlement of the issue.
Commenting on the proposal, Minister Kyne stated:
“One of the outstanding issues that I wished to bring closure to, following my appointment as Minister of State with responsibility for the Gaeltacht and the Islands, was the issue of claims from Galway County Council in relation to additional costs arising from the significant works carried out some years ago on Caladh Mór and Cill Rónáin Piers. I am pleased that I am now in a position to confirm this €6 million allocation from my Department, which, in addition to the €900,000 paid over the last 3 years, is being offered to the Council as a final settlement of this difficult issue. My Department and Galway County Council have had a strong relationship throughout the years, working together on many projects throughout the islands and the Gaeltacht to the benefit of the local communities. I am confident that this proposed settlement will ensure that we can continue to have the same strong relationship in the years ahead, particularly as we advance work on the new Inis Oírr Pier development project.”
