Minister of State McHugh welcomes Údarás na Gaeltachta’s review of 2017
Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for Irish, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Joe McHugh T.D., has welcomed the 2017 review published by Údarás na Gaeltachta today (29 January 2018).
The results show that 8,109 positions were held in companies supported by An tÚdarás at year’s end, 7,503 of which were full-time and 606 of which were part-time. 630 new full-time positions were created in An tÚdarás companies in 2017 and there was a net gain of 155 jobs over the previous year.
The Minister of State said, “These results published by Údarás na Gaeltachta are great news for the Gaeltacht. It is remarkable and encouraging to see from the results that employment levels have remained stable and that growth can be seen in these areas, with 25 new companies starting up in 2017 with the help of An tÚdarás and 57 new jobs being created as a result. With the appointment of a new board to An tÚdarás recently, I’m sure every effort will be made to continue with the great progress being made by An tÚdarás on an ongoing basis in relation to their work programme.”
The Minister of State acknowledged in particular the progress made by Údarás na Gaeltachta during 2017 on the implementation of the language planning process in the Gaeltacht, in conjunction with the community organisations on the ground. “I congratulate the Gaeltacht communities and An tÚdarás for the great work that has been done over the past year in relation to the language planning process. This is very important work in the context of meeting the Gaeltacht objectives of the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language. I am delighted to see that An tÚdarás managed to ensure that the process was underway in all 26 Language Planning Areas in 2017 as well as the process being given the necessary priority.”
