€17,796 in funding approved by Minister of State Kyne for Naíonra Ghaoth Dobhair

Government Chief-Whip and Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands Seán Kyne TD has announced that he has approved a capital grant of up to €17,796 in total for early years initiatives in the Gaoth Dobhair area to underpin both the language planning process and the policy on Gaeltacht education.

Under the grant he has approved under the Department’s Community and Language Supports Programme a grant worth up to €17,796 or 95% of the total cost of the initiative will be provided to Naíonra Ghaoth Dobhair to upgrade their existing play area.

The Minister of State said:  “For the purposes of providing improved support to the early years provision through the medium of Irish in Gaeltacht areas, my Department increased the maximum level of capital funding being provided to early years projects from 80% to 95% in accordance with action 3.12 of the Action Plan 2018-2022.  Naíonra Ghaoth Dobhair’s initiative is the third such initiative to benefit from that action. I have no doubt that the approved grants equate to further practical steps being taken in the interest of the Irish language in the language planning areas”.

He continued by saying:  The staff at Naíonra Ghaoth Dobhair are providing a high quality service which promotes a safe, enjoyable and beneficial experience for the child and I am delighted that it’s within my power to help them upgrade their play area and make it safer for the children.  Naíonra staff play a significant role in helping families who are raising their children through the Irish language by providing early education through the Irish language and in enriching the language.

It was announced in autumn 2018 that the Minister of State approved a current 3-year allowance of €1.62m to Comhar Naíonraí na Gaeltachta so that it can further develop the service it provides in the early years sector in the Gaeltacht.

This grant has been approved in accordance with the commitment made as part of the Community and Language Supports Programme under action 2.14, 2.21 and 2.22 of the Government’s Action Plan 2018-2022, which was launched in June 2018.
