McHugh welcomes Government decision re Bliain na Gaeilge 2018
Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Joe McHugh T.D., announced today that Bliain na Gaeilge 2018 has been approved by the Government.
Speaking at the Department of the Taoiseach today, McHugh also announced that the official launch of the annual celebration of our first national language will take place at Government Buildings next week.
Minister of State McHugh said that all Government Departments and Ministers will take part in the celebration in order to increase awareness around the use of the language throughout the year.
“I am delighted to announce that the Government today fully supported a cross-Government approach to Bliain na Gaeilge 2018, a special year to celebrate our national language. I can assure you that Bliain na Gaeilge will not focus solely on fluent speakers. Everyone will be welcomed – learners, people with little Irish, people in Ireland and abroad.
It is important, therefore, that those who are fortunate enough to be fluent or who have a lot of Irish support and encourage those who aren’t fluent speakers or who are out of practice due to a lack of opportunities.”
The President of Ireland, Micheál D. Ó hUigínn, will be patron of this special year for the Irish language which will be officially launched by An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar T.D. next week, on Wednesday the 20th December.
