28/05/12 – Minister Deenihan Launches New Archaeology Resource for Transition Year Students
Jimmy Deenihan, TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, today (28 May 2012) launched a new archaeological resource for Transition Year students.
The new “Archaeology, Time in Transition – It’s About Time 2” resource for Transition Year follows the Primary School pack and is aimed at encouraging the preservation of our built heritage through education. It first appeared in November 2009 and has proved to be hugely popular. Now out of print, the updated resource has been produced in electronic format to maximise future availability
The new CD and online resource, which aims to inform Transition Year students about archaeology in an engaging and interactive way, was officially launched by the Minister in the Limerick Education Centre. Guests included representatives from the archaeological community and the education sector along with teachers, students and parents from local secondary schools.
Describing the multimedia resource as “engaging and informative”, the Minister praised the good working relationship that has been established between the Limerick Education Centre and his Department’s National Monuments Service. ‘Together’, he said, ‘we have produced opportunities for Ireland’s school going population to engage with, and to grow to appreciate our rich archaeological heritage’.
Minister Deenihan commended the opportunity the resource presented for students to be brought outdoors to engage in a practical way with their local environment. “I believe that this greatly helps students to understand and appreciate their own unique local heritage in a way that will stay with them throughout their lives’, he said. ‘Today’s students are after all the future custodians of our invaluable archaeological resources.’
The CD will be posted to over 700 secondary schools and will be available shortly to download, free of charge, at www.itsabouttime.ie.
