29/04/2015 Minister Humphreys announces €35,000 in funding on visit to Pearse House

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Wednesday) announced that she is providing funding of €35,000 for refurbishment works and a photography exhibition at Pearse House in Dublin 2. The Minister made the announcement on a visit to the historic building, at 27 Pearse Street, which was the birthplace of the Pearse brothers, Pádraig and Willie.

Speaking today Minister Humphreys said:

“I am pleased to announce that my Department is providing €35,000 for Pearse House, as it is an important historic building in the context of the 1916 Rising. No 27 Pearse Street was the birthplace of Pádraig Pearse and his brother Willie. Both brothers played crucial roles in the 1916 Rising, and of course they were both executed in its aftermath.

“A once-off grant of €30,000 is being provided for decorative and refurbishment works to Pearse House to prepare it for commemorative events due to take place in 2016. This funding will provide the Ireland Institute for Historical and Cultural Studies, which runs the House, with essential investment for the upkeep of the historic building in advance of the centenary of the Rising.

“My Department is also providing funding of €5,000 for a photographic exhibition at Pearse House.  The exhibition will gather local and personal narratives and objects that tell the individual stories and perspectives of 1916. It aims to broaden the general public’s understanding of the 1916 Rising and support the centre’s  educational outreach work.

“The restoration of Pearse House will complement the work being carried out at Teach an Phiarsaigh, Ros Muc, Co. Galway. Teach an Phiarsaigh was used by Pádraig Pearse as a summer home and is one of the seven flagship capital projects being developed as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme.”
