Minister of State Seán Kyne attends Meeting of the British-Irish Council on the Isle of Man

Seán Kyne T.D., Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands has attended the 5th Ministerial Meeting of the Indigenous, Minority and Lesser-used Languages Group of the British-Irish Council on the Isle of Man on the 22nd of November 2019, during which the latest developments in that area were discussed.  Amongst the areas that the group has been working on in recent years are the adult learner and the use of languages socially (social media/other).

"This is an opportunity for me to hold discussions with Ministers from other jurisdictions which have different language communities, communities which speak a native, minority or lesser-used language,” the Minister of State said.

The work that has been completed by the committee in recent years was discussed, as well as the work programme that has been laid out between now the next three years, where focus will be directed on:

  • social use of the language
  • the early years and
  • Infrastructure / technology.

The Irish Government is taking continuous steps to promote the Irish language, including the publication of the 5 Year Action Plan 2018-2022 and the Gaeltacht Education Policy. There is a particular interest in language matters in the area of technology in this current era of technology and it is hoped that a Digital Strategy for the Irish Language will soon be published.

Referring to the objective of the meeting, the Minister of State stated: "These valuable meetings give us the opportunity to share expertise and good practice in promoting a language, and to learn and to support each other in promoting and in developing language communities".

This work group was established in 2002 under the British-Irish Council with the aim of focussing on language matters associated with the Irish, Welsh, Scots Gaelic, Ulster-Scots, Manx, Jèrriais, Guernésiais and Cornish languages.
