The Gaeltacht

The Department supports a range of language-centred programmes and organisations for the purpose of promoting the Irish language as the primary household and community language in the Gaeltacht in the context of the implementation of the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030. Current funding is provided under various schemes including the Irish Language Learners’ Scheme, the Irish Language Assistants’ Scheme and the Irish Language Summer Camps. Capital funding is provided for the development and maintenance of various community language-centred facilities in the Gaeltacht.

The Department funds and works closely with Údarás na Gaeltachta as the regional development agency for the Gaeltacht. Under the Gaeltacht Act 2012, Údarás na Gaeltachta is responsible for supporting organisations with regard to the preparation and implementation of language plans in Gaeltacht Language Planning Areas and in certain Gaeltacht Service Towns.
