Current Programme

Irish Language Learners Scheme

Grants under the Irish Language Learners Scheme are paid to qualifying Gaeltacht families who provide suitable accommodation for Irish Language learners while attending recognised Irish Language courses. This assistance is granted to help households in the Gaeltacht accommodate Irish Language learners in their homes where those learners will have an opportunity to experience the Irish Language where it is spoken naturally as the everyday language of the community.

Irish Summer Colleges

Although the administration of the Irish Language Summer Colleges is the responsibility of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the Department of Education and Skills retains an important input in that system. It provides advice with regard to matters relating to teaching, teacher qualifications and the general quality of the courses as well as being actively involved in the monitoring of the colleges in conjunction with the Department. CONCOS (Comhchoiste an gColáistí Samhraidh) is the umbrella organisation for the majority of the Summer Colleges and they can be contacted through www.concos.ie or at 091 577050

Irish Language Assistance Scheme

The objective of this scheme is to reinforce Irish as the spoken language among young people in the Gaeltacht. With regard to the Language Assistants Scheme, two organisations, Muintearas Teo and Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne Teo, manage the scheme on behalf of the Department. This service is delivered for the most part through the network of Gaeltacht primary schools. This scheme is due for revision in 2015/2016 in conjunction with the Department of Education and Skills in the context of that Department’s Policy Proposals for Educational Provision in Gaeltacht Areas. More information on the Irish Language Assistance Scheme is available at www.ancuntoir.ie
