Killarney National Park – notification of Partial Site Closure

There will be parts of Killarney National Park closed on Wednesday the 4th and Wednesday the 11th of March 2020.

This is due to on-going management of the Deer Herd there by the National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

The NPWS will be carrying out a limited, day-time cull of deer in the vicinity of Knockreer on the mornings of Wednesday the 4th and Wednesday the 11th of March 2020.   As part of this operational exercise it will be necessary to temporarily restrict public access to certain areas of the Park between 06.30 hrs. and 11.30 hrs. on each of these days.

Knockreer Demesne, Knockreer, Reen, Prospect, Ballydowney and Belleview will be closed to all public access during these management operations.

For reasons of  public safety, it is important that there is no pedestrian, cyclist, vehicular or horse-drawn carriage access to these sites and we ask that members of the public heed all warnings signs. The NPWS asks for co-operation and understanding  in this regard .

On an on-going basis, as part of its regular management operations, the NPWS carries out highly managed culls of deer within the National Park when required. In addition to regular population management, this particular cull is being carried during day-light hours to facilitate some further investigation into incidence of copper deficiency in the herd.
