Míle Glór Launch
The campaign Míle Glór will be launched by the Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands Seán Kyne T.D. at Oireachtas na Gaeilge at 6pm on the 30th October 2019.
The Míle Glór campaign is part of the technology project ABAIR.ie which aims to record 1,000 individuals speaking Irish – individuals from different age groups and individuals who speak in different dialects. These recordings are necessary in order to develop a variety of technologies, including voice recognition – the ability of a computer to interpret spoken commands like Alexa or Siri. Synthetic voices on www.abair.ie have already been created as a result of the research carried out by the Phonetics and Speech Laboratory at Trinity College.
The Minister of State Kyne said today:
“The support that the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is giving to this important project is a huge source of pride to me. The public are invited to take part in this new campaign, Míle Glór. ABAIR have a stand at Aonach an Oireachtais and the ABAIR staff are there to record 15 minutes of each person speaking. They would greatly appreciate it if people would also record themselves at home and they can do this by visiting www.abair.tcd.ie/mileglor.”
“With the public’s support we can ensure that the Irish language is centre stage as far as the digital world is concerned.”
