Minister of State McHugh announces a public application process for the appointment of the new board of Údarás na Gaeltachta
Joe McHugh, T.D., Government Chief Whip and Minister of State with responsibility for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, today (19 October 2017) announced that expressions of interest are being sought from individuals interested in appointment to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta.
The Minister of State said: “As the term of office of the current board expires on 19 November, I am commencing the application process for appointments to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta. The application process will be organised by the Public Appointments Service in accordance with the Guidelines on Appointments to State Boards. Accordingly, people with relevant qualifications and experience will have the opportunity to put themselves forward for appointment.”
Further information on the expressions of interest process is available at www.stateboards.ie. Persons interested in being considered for appointment to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta must apply online at www.stateboards.ie by 15:00 on 9 November 2017.
Note for the Editor
The current board was appointed in November 2012 and as the board lasts for a period of five years, the term of office of the current board will expire on 19th November. Under the Gaeltacht Act 2012, Údarás na Gaeltachta has a board of twelve members. Seven of these members are appointed by the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, including the Chairperson.
In relation to the other five members, local authorities, with Gaeltacht areas under their jurisdiction, nominate these five members for appointment by the Minister. The process in relation to local authority nominations is already underway.
Subject to provisions of the Act, the term of office of members shall not exceed five years and members shall not be appointed to office for more than two consecutive terms.
