Minister of State Ó Ríordáin to participate in Gallipoli commemoration
The Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin TD, will participate in a special commemorative service organised by the Somme Association at Green Hill Cemetery in Gallipoli on Tuesday 6th October 2015. The service will honour the memory of those men of the 10th (Irish) Division who took part in the Gallipoli Campaign.
The Minister will lay a wreath on behalf of the Government and people of Ireland at the memorial and will join with the Somme Association’s President the Duke of Gloucester, in unveiling a plaque to the memory of those who served.
The visit follows on from the iconic visit by President Mary McAleese and the Duke of Gloucester, on the occasion of the 95th Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign in 2010.
Speaking ahead of the visit, the Minister said:
“I welcome and look forward to this opportunity of representing the Government and people of Ireland on this centenary of the Gallipoli campaign. It is important that we acknowledge and remember the role of the 10th Irish Division and all those who took part and lost their lives in Gallipoli during these months of 1915.”
This visit will complete the Government’s official commemorative programme in respect of the Gallipoli campaign which saw President Michael D.Higgins visit Gallipoli in April for a series of commemorative events, including a joint Commonwealth and Ireland commemorative event on 25th April. A series of events have also taken place in Ireland including the launch of the dedicated Gallipoli website operated by Century Ireland.
