Minister to launch Galway 2020 Cultural Programme

On Wednesday, 18th September, the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan, will launch the Cultural Programme for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture.

The details of the Galway 2020 Programme will be announced by the Minister, alongside the Chair of Galway 2020, Arthur Lappin to a public audience. The announcement will be followed by a spectacle in Eyre Square. The Programme will commence in early February 2020 and encompasses projects in Galway city and county, including the islands, as well as a spread of events across Ireland and Northern Ireland. The themes are based on language, landscape and migration, celebrating the diversity of cultures in Europe many of the events are free to the public.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Minister said that “the designation of Galway as European Capital of Culture is a once in a lifetime opportunity which offers not alone Galway, but Ireland the chance to shine the bright beacon of our culture across Europe and globally.  From the most western coast in Europe, Ireland will engage more intensely with our cultural partners across the EU and beyond.  I congratulate the team at Galway 2020 and wish all those involved in delivering the year every success.”

The Government has committed funding of €15 million to the Galway European Capital of Culture. Galway 2020 offers a significant platform to highlight Ireland’s creativity and to build bridges with European partners with projects planned with 23 EU countries and many other global interests.
