One Day Seminar – Employment Opportunities for Irish speakers in the EU

Seminar with representatives from the Institutions of the Union

Practical workshops focussed on preparing candidates for the selection process

The Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Seán Kyne TD, is pleased to announce that the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, in association with the European Commission, will organise a one-day seminar on employment opportunities for Irish speakers in the European Union. The event will take place this Wednesday the 30th of October in the Citywest Hotel, Dublin as part of Oireachtas na Samhna.

It is not necessary for candidates to have studied Irish as a subject to qualify for these positions. Students from all kinds of study programmes who have a proficiency in Irish can apply, creating therefore a particular opportunity for people from the Gaeltacht who have a university degree or who are currently in the process of achieving a degree.

Minister of State Kyne stated that he was very pleased with the seminar’s approach, which will include a particular emphasis on providing practical assistance to those who are interested in these employment opportunities:

‘Earlier in the year I was pleased to inform the Government of the progress made on the gradual reduction of the derogation on the use of Irish as an official and working language of the European Union. There are many employment opportunities available in Europe for Irish people who have a high level of Irish. These are highly trained, specialised positions and thus, are well paid positions.  I am delighted therefore, that this seminar is directed at those who are interested in working in Europe.’

‘There will be talks with representatives from the Institutions of the Union regarding the employment and recruitment opportunities available as well as talks with Irish representatives on the ways in which they are helping candidates to prepare for the selection processes and any other preparations needed. Practical workshops will also be held during the afternoon and will be focussed on better preparing the candidates to succeed in the selection processes for the main language roles in the Institutes.  I would advise anyone who is interested in these opportunities to register their place now at Citywest Hotel this Wednesday.”
