Rural Recreation

This work of Rural Recreation is to provide for actions to develop countryside recreation in line with the objectives of the National Countryside Recreation Strategy as developed by Comhairle Na Tuaithe (The Countryside Council).  It also encompasses the implementation of the Walks Scheme which is a maintenance based scheme providing modest payments to landowners who maintain sections of National Way Marked Ways and priority walks that traverse their lands.

2017 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme

The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme is part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development and will provide funding for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure or the necessary maintenance, enhancement or promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in Ireland.

 

Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring TD announced on the 28th April 2017 details of the 2017 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme is part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development and will provide funding for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure or the necessary maintenance, enhancement or promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in Ireland.

The Scheme will provide funding for the development of outdoor recreational infrastructure and for the necessary maintenance, enhancement or promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in rural areas across Ireland.

The 2017 Scheme will be implemented over a period of up to 15 months to allow for the effective implementation of larger strategic projects, in particular.  Applications to the value of €11 million will be approved this year.

Categories of Application

Applications will be accepted from Local Authorities and/or State Agencies under the following three measures:

Measure 1:   Small Scale Maintenance/Promotional and Marketing

Projects to include grant aid amounts of up to €10,000 (€2 million available in total).

Measure 2:   Medium Scale Repair/Upgrade and New Trail Development

Grant amounts of up to €100,000 (€3 million available in total)

Measure 3:   Large Scale Repair/Upgrade and New Strategic Trail Development

Grant amounts of over €100,000 and up to €1million, (€6 million available in total).
